As Augustine said, we do what we desire. Our sin is the result of our affections being improperly ordered, of loving what we aught not, or even loving something good more than the ultimate good, which is God. Virtue is nothing other than the perfect love of God. But this right ordering of affections is only attainable through the grace of God. And that is why we also must pray with Augustine, “Set love in order in me.” (City of God, XV.22)
